A People Set Apart

Leviticus 23:6–8 appoints seven days of unleavened bread immediately after Passover. Israel left Egypt in haste, carrying dough before it was leavened. The feast therefore remembers both rescue and the decisive departure from the old place of bondage.

Grace forms a new way of life

Deliverance is a gift, yet it also creates a people set apart to God. Scripture uses leaven as a picture in several ways; in 1 Corinthians 5:8 Paul applies the feast morally, calling believers away from malice and wickedness and toward sincerity and truth.

Practising truthful freedom

The feast invites honest examination. We do not cleanse ourselves in order to earn redemption. Because Christ has redeemed us, we put away patterns that contradict the life we have received. Holiness is freedom made visible.
