Lesson 5 — Movement, Knowledge, and Time
Today’s outcomes
Retrieve earlier verbs and nouns, learn twelve additional high-frequency words, distinguish movement directions, interpret flexible meanings, and read Genesis 1:4–5 as six connected sense units.
1. Retrieval warm-up — ranks 1–48
Give the meaning before playing the recording. These items connect directly to today’s text.
2. New Hebrew 700 vocabulary — ranks 49–60
Echo once, retrieve twice. The displayed form gives a useful pointed form for pronunciation; the Hebrew 700 source sometimes lists only unpointed root letters.
3. Build four meaning networks
Movement
went out · returned · went up
Knowing and noticing
knew · eye · look!/behold
Identity and time
one · name · year
Action and relation
took · died · with
Use these categories for meaning, but practice the words in mixed order.
4. Movement contrasts
Movement outward from an interior or place.
Movement back toward an earlier place or state.
Upward movement, including travel toward elevated or significant places.
5. Words whose meaning depends on context
Do not confuse it with עַם, “people.” The vowel and context distinguish them.
Usually “eye,” but it can name a natural water source.
Biblical knowing can involve recognition, skill, relationship, or experience—not merely factual information.
A discourse signal that directs attention. Natural English translation varies.
6. Continuous Torah reading — Genesis 1:4–5
Continue from the creation of light. Verse 4 evaluates and separates; verse 5 names and closes the first day.
God saw that the light was good
God separated the light from the darkness
God called the light Day
the darkness He called Night
there was evening and morning
day one
Complete continuous passage
“God saw that the light was good and separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, the darkness He called Night, and there was evening and morning, day one.”
7. Reading insights
Naming pattern
Hebrew can place the assigned name after the verb “called.”
Repeated fulfillment
The repeated form means “and there was,” connecting back to Lesson 2.

- What two things are separated?
- What are light and darkness named?
- Which repeated form means “and there was”?
- Why is אֶחָד masculine?
9. Active recall
Complete 15–20 mixed-direction questions and say each Hebrew answer aloud.
10. Production and exit check
- Say the three movement words and demonstrate each direction.
- Explain the contrast between עִם and עַם.
- Give two meanings of עַיִן.
