Today’s outcomes

Recall the central particles from Lesson 1, learn twelve high-frequency items, contrast pronouns, recognize foundational roots, and read Genesis 1:2–3 as six continuous phrases.

1. Retrieval warm-up — Lesson 1

Test first; replay only after attempting an answer. Tap a Hebrew item to check its sound.

Thirty-second challenge: Say the meanings of וְ, הַ, בְּ, לְ, and אֵת. Then say “I, you, he, they” in Hebrew.

2. New Hebrew 700 vocabulary — words 13–24

Use three passes: listen and echo; cover the English and retrieve; finally hear the English meaning and produce the Hebrew.

3. Pronoun contrast

masculine singular
הוּא
he
feminine singular
הִיא
she
masculine singular
אַתָּה
you
masculine plural
אַתֶּם
you all

Listen, then repeat twice:

הוּא · הִיא · אַתָּה · אַתֶּם

Notice the contrast אַתָּה / אַתֶּם. Biblical Hebrew marks number and gender directly in many pronouns and verb forms.

4. Three small words with large jobs

אֲשֶׁר
that / which / who

Introduces a description or relative clause. Its exact English translation depends on context.

כִּי
for / because / that / when

Do not memorize only one English equivalent. Read the clause relationship.

לֹא
not

The normal negator for statements. A small word that changes the whole clause.

Meaning selection: Which word best completes each idea?
  1. “the word ___ he spoke” → אֲשֶׁר
  2. “___, because …” → כִּי
  3. “he did ___ go” → לֹא

These are meaning demonstrations, not quotations from Scripture.

5. See the root inside the word

A Hebrew root carries a core field of meaning. Today, recognize the root letters before learning full conjugation tables.

אָמַר
he said

Root: א־מ־ר. In Genesis 1:3 it appears as וַיֹּאמֶר, “and He said.”

הָיָה
he/it was; became

Root: ה־י־ה. In the verse, יְהִי means “let there be,” and וַיְהִי means “and there was.”

עָשָׂה
he made / did

Root: ע־שׂ־ה. Learn the core meaning now; its forms will recur throughout Torah.

Root hunt: Read אָמַר → וַיֹּאמֶר and הָיָה → יְהִי → וַיְהִי. Point to the letters that remain recognizable. Some vowels and even weak root letters change across forms.

6. Continuous Torah reading — Genesis 1:2–3

Continue directly from Genesis 1:1. Master the condition of the earth in verse 2 before reading God’s first spoken command in verse 3.

1 וְהָאָרֶץ הָיְתָה תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ
vəha'aretz hayətah tohu vavohu
the earth was unformed and empty
2 וְחֹשֶׁךְ עַל־פְּנֵי תְהוֹם
vəchoshekh al-pənei təhom
darkness was over the face of the deep
3 וְרוּחַ אֱלֹהִים מְרַחֶפֶת עַל־פְּנֵי הַמָּיִם
vəruach Elohim mərachefet al-pənei hamayim
the Spirit/wind of God hovered over the waters
4 וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים
vayomer Elohim — and God said
5 יְהִי אוֹר
yəhi or — let there be light
6 וַיְהִי־אוֹר
vayhi or — and there was light

Complete continuous passage

וְהָאָרֶץ הָיְתָה תֹהוּ וָבֹהוּ וְחֹשֶׁךְ עַל־פְּנֵי תְהוֹם וְרוּחַ אֱלֹהִים מְרַחֶפֶת עַל־פְּנֵי הַמָּיִם׃ וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים יְהִי אוֹר וַיְהִי־אוֹר׃

“The earth was unformed and empty, darkness was over the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God hovered over the waters. God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”

7. Guided comprehension

  1. How is the earth described?
  2. What is over the deep?
  3. What hovers over the waters?
  4. Who speaks, and what is commanded?
  5. How does verse 3 show immediate fulfillment?
1. Unformed and empty · 2. darkness · 3. the Spirit/wind of God · 4. God commands light to exist · 5. “Let there be light” is followed by “and there was light.”

8. Active recall

Complete at least 15 questions. Say the Hebrew answer aloud before selecting it whenever the prompt gives English.

9. Production

  1. Say “he / she / you / you all” in Hebrew.
  2. Explain the difference between לֹא, כִּי, and אֲשֶׁר.
  3. Read all six Genesis 1:2–3 phrase units independently.
  4. Copy both verses. Circle אֱלֹהִים and underline forms related to היה.
  5. Record the continuous passage and compare phrase boundaries with the model.
  6. Without looking, say the Hebrew words for God, son, all/every, not, and she.

10. Exit check and review

Repeat only the failed section and retest. Accuracy comes before speed.

Spaced review: review Lesson 2 after 10 minutes, then after 1, 3, 7, 14, and 30 days. Reread Genesis 1:1–3 continuously.
