Lesson 1 — First Building Blocks

By the end of this 35–45 minute lesson, you should be able to read four inseparable prefixes, recall eight additional high-frequency words, distinguish four pronouns, and read Genesis 1:1 phrase by phrase and as a complete verse. Say each Hebrew item before looking at its transliteration.
1. Warm-up: how Hebrew moves
Hebrew reads from right to left. Consonants carry the word; the dots and small marks around them show vowels and other reading information.
Place your finger at the right edge of בְּרֵאשִׁית and move left. Do not name every symbol while reading. Blend the syllables: bə–re–shit.

Pattern discovery
Joins words: וְ + אֵת → וְאֵת. It normally attaches to the following word.
Marks a definite noun. The following consonant may strengthen with dagesh.
These are inseparable prepositions: they attach directly to the noun.
Prefix contrast drill
Cover the English. Point and answer aloud:
- Which one means and?
- Which one means the?
- Which one means in/with?
- Which one means to/for?
2. Pronoun pattern
First person; the same form is used by men and women.
Second-person masculine singular.
Third-person masculine singular.
Masculine or mixed plural.
Retrieval: Look away and say: “I — you — he — they.” Then reverse it: hear the Hebrew in your mind and give the English.
3. Torah reading ladder — Genesis 1:1
Use the listen → echo → read cycle. For each line: listen once, echo twice without looking, then read it once. Do not rush into the full verse.

What can you already see?
- בְּ־ begins בְּרֵאשִׁית: “in …”
- הַ־ marks “the” in הַשָּׁמַיִם.
- וְ־ begins the final phrase: “and …”
- אֵת marks a definite direct object. It is normally not translated as a separate English word.
4. Guided comprehension
- Who created? אֱלֹהִים
- Which word means “created”? בָּרָא
- Find both appearances of אֵת.
- Which prefix joins the second object to the first?
- Read only the phrase meaning “and the earth.”
5. Active recall
Complete at least 12 questions. After every answer, say the Hebrew aloud. A correct click without spoken production trains recognition but not recall.
6. Produce
- Say “I / you / he / they” in Hebrew without looking.
- Point to the prefix meaning “and,” then “the,” then “in,” then “to.”
- Read aloud: אֵת הַשָּׁמַיִם and וְאֵת הָאָרֶץ.
- Copy Genesis 1:1 once. Circle בְּ, הַ, וְ and underline both occurrences of אֵת.
- Record yourself reading the four phrase units. Compare rhythm and vowels with the model.
- Finally, read the entire verse without transliteration.
7. Exit check
Without scrolling upward, can you:
- recall at least 10 of the 12 target items?
- explain why אֵת has no separate English translation here?
- read all four verse phrases?
- read the complete verse with no more than one hesitation?
If not, repeat only the missed section, then test again. Do not simply replay the whole lesson.
